What do you monitor?
We monitor physical characteristics, such as stream bank height, vegetation and presence of trash, of streams in Howard County.
Why do you monitor?
Stream Mapper was created to get residents familiar with their local streams and connect people to nature. We are also monitoring for signs of the health of our local streams as well as changes to the stream over time. Physical characteristics of a stream, such as bank height, can provide information about impacts from upstream land use. A large stream bank height indicates erosion and could mean better stormwater management controls are needed in the surrounding area. Stream Mapper reports can help inform decisions and help identify potential project areas for stream restoration or trash clean ups.
